welcome to the stone canoe blog-"Signs of Life"
Welcome to our new blog. We welcome any comments you have about the Stone Canoe arts journal, the "state of the arts" in Upstate New York, or in the world in general. Our bias is that the arts need to play an important role in the revitalization of our region, which everyone agrees is needed. Syracuse University is helping, through its commitment to "scholarship in action" and its support of a range of public arts projects. The Stone Canoe project-- the journal itself and related art exhibits and readings-- is just one of many university-sponsored efforts intended to enrich the cultural life of the community, and spread the word to the rest of the world that this really is a region rich in intellectual and cultural liveliness and diversity, an interesting place to love and work.
We are curious about what you think-- what is going on that is of cultural interest in the region, what have you seen or heard lately that impresses you --or not--is the local and regional media playing their part in promoting and showcasing what is worthwhile in the regional art scene? Suggested links? Reviews? Feel free.
What signs of life do you see?
More broadly, we welcome suggestions for more general topics of interest to the arts-- what is "public art" anyway, and what role should critical assessment and selectivity have in the conversation? Diversity? Excellence? Censorship? Public support?
Any opinion about Syracuse' connective corridor?

Great blog, great journal. Keep up the good work.
These are spectacular journals. They are works of art. Thank you. It would be great to have a subscription available (or multiples for gifts).
